Where should i place my skip?
For homeowners, proper placement of the skip is crucial. A skip typically requires an entrance width of 11 feet (3.4 meters) and can be up to 12 feet long.
While most driveways can accommodate skips, it's important to assess the quality of the surface, considering the weight of the lorries. Additionally, factors such as exposed drain covers, low-hanging branches, or limited access should be taken into account.
We highly recommend providing detailed information when placing your skip order. Feel free to contact us if you have any uncertainties or questions.
-
Do I need a permit/licence for delivery of a skip?
Should the skip be destined for placement on public property, such as a highway or council-owned area, we will coordinate the acquisition of a skip permit from your local council. Additionally, we will arrange for proper lighting and the placement of cones on the skip to ensure compliance with regulations.

What is POPs and the Change of Legislation Regarding Upholstered Furniture?
POPs, or Persistent Organic Pollutants, encompass chemical substances that exhibit resistance to environmental breakdown.
In adherence to regulatory standards, it is our duty as a compliant operator to categorize and separate any waste entering our sites that is likely to harbor POPs, ensuring tailored processing.
Items of domestic furniture, such as upholstered sofas or chairs (subject to charges), footstools, and bean bags, may potentially contain POPs. Additionally, certain electronic and electrical items may also include these pollutants.

More on Skip Liscences
When will you need a skip permit? If you plan to place your skip on a public highway, you will need to obtain a skip permit from your local council.
There are exceptions: a skip licence is not required, for instance, on unadopted roads not maintained by the highway authority under the Highways Act 1980. Unadopted roads are often found in quiet residential areas with low traffic volume, usually only used by the residents.
Who arranges the skip permit? Hemans Skip will take care of arranging your skip permit and the local authority charges will be included in your order. The permits can be requested online or by calling our office. The charges for local authority skip licences vary significantly, typically starting at £30.
A skip permit usually lasts one or two weeks, but this varies depending on the council. Most councils allow the initial period to be extended, but there will be an additional fee for the extension. If you need to keep a skip for longer than the agreed permit duration, please contact us as soon as possible.
A minimum of four traffic cones must be placed to mark the approach towards the skip. At night, lights must be attached to the corners of the skips and between each cone, and they must remain lit throughout the night. These are provided by Hemans and delivered with the skip whenever a skip permit is ordered.
What happens if I don’t have a permit? It is illegal for a skip to be on a public highway without a permit. Any skips without a license can be removed without notice, and you could face a fine of up to £1,000.
